NEW YORK (October 7, 2019) — According to a recent survey conducted by TopResume, employers are placing their latest bets on a candidate's likelihood for success. In fact, when TopResume, the largest resume-writing service in the world, inquired about what they value most in job candidates, the candidate's “potential” surfaced as the single-most important factor, beating out both “experience” and “education.”
As part of the research, nearly 200 recruiters and hiring managers from across the country were asked, “Which of the following is most important in a candidate?” and the results are as follows:
-
Their potential (45%)
-
Their experience (37%)
-
Their personality (16%)
-
Their education (2%)
“As the job market continues to evolve at breakneck speed, it's naive to think that your industry will be immune to change, which is why the savviest job seekers continue to build their skills,” said Jeff Berger, founder of Talent Inc., the global leader in technology-enabled career services, and the parent company of TopResume. “Our latest survey proves that employers want to see a genuine willingness in today's workforce to be problem-solvers, even if that requires the employee to demonstrate initiative well beyond their job description. They're prioritizing candidates with an ability and willingness to learn, grow, and expand their expertise.”
According to the TopResume survey, the question “How do you currently evaluate a candidate's potential?” revealed the top three methods below, in descending order of popularity:
-
Assessing during the interview process
-
Reviewing the candidate's resume
-
Conducting soft and hard skills assessments
“Whereas the resume reports on the candidate's experience and education and offers insights into a candidate's potential, TopResume's latest survey confirms that the interview creates the unique opportunity for job seekers to demonstrate the 'intangibles' — a desire for more responsibilities, a capability for high achievement, and a deep level of engagement — which are incredibly attractive to employers,” said TopResume career expert Amanda Augustine, a certified professional career coach and resume writer. “Clearly, today's hiring managers are focusing more on the 'full picture' of what will make a candidate a great hire, which is why being 'interview-ready' is paramount for landing that next job.”
